There are many interesting hiking paths in the forests of Tavush, and often on their way you can find monuments of historical significance.
Among these monuments are the Arakelots Monastery on the outskirts of the village of Acharkut and the brick Kirants monastery, hidden deep in the forest.
It will be possible to see after walking about 20 km along a forest mountain road.
The road sometimes passes through the river in the shade of trees, and if you're lucky, you can meet forest inhabitants.
Arakelots monastery complex was built in the Middle Ages on the site of an old settlement.
Now it is in the shadow of a dense forest.
Arakelots consists of several buildings of 2 churches with a porch of many outbuildings, most of which are currently in a dilapidated state.
This 13th-century monastery complex is one of the unique ones. It is built of brick, something unusual for Armenian architecture.
Far from all eyes and ears, deep in the forest, this monastery complex suggests what an important role it once played in the science and education.
It is the largest brick church in Armenia.
