Amberd is half-ruined, but it still testifies to the power and invincibility of time.
Amberd was built at the confluence of the Arkashen and Amberd rivers, at an inaccessible height, like many defensive structures at that time.
It is located at an altitude of 2300 m above sea level, as a result of which winters become difficult to reach due to heavy precipitation. It is known that traces of more ancient-Cyclopean, later Urartian, Hellenistic buildings were found here.
Today’s preserved buildings of Amberd date back to the 7th-13th centuries. The stone fence, the walls of the castle and the bath, Vahramashen church and a chapel are standing yet. The fortress had caches providing access to the gorge.
